Artist puts on retrospective

Ladner artist Michael Abraham will have a retrospective exhibit with over two decades of his work on display this summer at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam.

The exhibit, Apologues, features bold, colourful and irreverent paintings and sculptures that hold a funhouse mirror up to society, politics and human behaviour.

An apologue is a brief story that is similar to a fable or parable, but differs in that it uses rhetorical arguments and exaggeration to sway the viewer in a moral direction without explicitly stating its intention.

Like his title suggests, Abraham does not aim for realism, and instead uses abstraction to observe society and politics at play with a phenomenological and psychological slant, according to a press release from the gallery.

Abraham, who was born in Montreal, has been featured in solo exhibitions in both Vancouver and Los Angeles, as well as in group exhibitions across North America. He is a highly successful commercial artist and his work is included in public and private collections across Canada and the United States.

Michael Abraham: Apologues runs in the Art Gallery at Evergreen from July 20 to Aug. 31.

The opening reception is on Sunday, July 21 from 3 to 6 p.m. and includes an artist talk with Abraham from 3 to 4 p.m. Regular gallery hours are Monday to Saturday, noon to 5 p.m., with free public tours every Saturday at 2 p.m. The gallery is located at 1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam.
