Head pro Brent Derrheim, assistant pro Jordan Rodda and members Jeff Norris and Jon Hwang golfed from sunrise to sunset on Thursday, June 20 in the 14th annual PGA of BC Golfathon for ALS.

Derrheim finished five rounds before he had to stop due to an injury; Rodda completed 13 while Norris and Hwang each played 11 rounds.

It was a 17-hour day on the course with the last few holes played in the dark.

“It was harder than any of the normal days for golf,” said Norris. “The scores were surprisingly good. We didn’t get worse as the day progressed.”
Rodda said his last nine holes were, in fact, his best nine of the day.

“It was in the dark and I was trying to hit it as straight as possible,” he said. “I was two-under par – it was awesome. But I think it was certainly overall harder than we thought. I know I was pretty sore for a couple of days afterwards.”
All four said they would take on the challenge again.

“The last couple of rounds the members that live on the course were coming out and cheering us on. I got a standing ovation from a group – the members are so supportive,” said Rodda.

Norris said members came up to them and donated money while they were on the course.

“We had others come out to clear the course as well, which was really nice so we could keep the pace of play up,” added Hwang.

Norris said the goal maybe next year is to get four guys out to do 1,000 holes.

“It would be tough, but it is doable,” said Hwang.

Beach Grove have been long-time supporters of the event.

Derrheim was one of the first from Beach Grove to take on the challenge many years ago, while club pros Shaun Lundy and Cory Rudston-Brown followed in his footsteps the past few years. This year was the first time that members from the club participated.
