The Coldest Night of the Year fundraising walk is coming to Delta.

Deltassist will be hosting a local edition of the national initiative next month in North Delta.

The idea behind the event is for participants to feel what it’s like to be out in the cold, in the middle of February, for a couple hours, says local event coordinator Kirsti Kober.

Participants can complete a 2, 5, or 10-kilometre route as well as receive a warm, light meal. Walkers and volunteers can collect pledges online through the event’s website, Kober notes.

Proceeds will go towards Deltassist’s programs for seniors and to help improve food security for those at risk, says event chair Lorraine Yates. Deltassist is hoping to build a community garden at its North Delta office, she adds.

The walk takes place Feb. 24 with the New Hope Church, 11838-88th Ave., serving as the start and finish location. Day-of registration starts at 4 p.m. while an opening ceremony is set for 5 p.m.
