Are you searching for a way to be more involved in helping the vulnerable in Delta? You’re invited to Alongside You’s Friday Night Knitting bi-annual (September and January) kick-off event on Sept. 6 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. People of all ages, abilities and skill level (beginner to novice) are welcome. The event is by donation and will be used for the Step Forward Program that helps those in need of financial assistance in accessing Alongside You services. RSVP to 604-283-7827.

Toad People will be hosted by the South Delta BC Greens on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. at Ladner United Church. One of the two filmmakers is planning to attend. All are welcome. Write a story and then learn how to bind it together into a book at the Ladner Pioneer Library. Drop by the library for Create Your Own Book on Saturdays, Sept, 7, 14 and 21, from 2 to 3 p.m. for inspiration, help getting started and time to complete your creation. Then on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., learn how to bind your masterpiece together into a book. On Sept. 25, drop your completed book off at the library to be part of a display during Culture Days, Sept. 27 to 29. 

 

The final car boot sale of 2019 will be held Saturday, Sept. 7 at Centennial Beach in Boundary Bay Regional Park. It will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon, weather permitting. Cost is $10 for vendors. The fall season for the Delta Photo Club begins on Sept. 11 at the KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen. Social and membership sign-up (renewals and new members - $70 for the year) is at 7 p.m., the workshop runs 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and will feature international award-winning photographer and instructor Sharon Tenenbaum.

 

Delta Nats casual birding walk will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 9 a.m. to noon at Boundary Bay Regional Park. Join Tom Bearss and his informal birdwatchers for an amble around Boundary Bay. Bring binoculars if you have them. The outing will end with a beverage and snack at historic Cammidge House. The Canadian Federation of University Women South Delta meets the fourth Tuesday of the month at Benediction Lutheran Church in Tsawwassen at 7:15 p.m. With monthly guest speakers and interest groups, the club is dedicated to the promotion of education and improvement of the status of women.  Membership is open to all women who wish to engage in advocacy, hear a variety of speakers and join special interest groups (a university degree is not a pre-requisite). Join a free adult Suicide Grief Support Group where you can share your feelings and thoughts in a safe and supportive environment, learn about coping strategies and resources, and develop community with others. Then join the Centre for Supportive Care’s free Relaxation Circle where you will learn and practice relaxation techniques and experience soothing touch by volunteers, guided imagery and live music by a music therapist. Looking for meaningful volunteer work that supports a culture of caring and respect? Then consider applying to the Delta Hospice Society’s Introductory Hospice Volunteer Training Program that starts on Sept. 30. Volunteers companion/support individuals and families at home and the hospice, work at the Centre for Supportive Care’s reception and lending library, participate in support groups, offer complementary therapies and provide vigils so people don’t die alone. Restorative yoga for people living with cancer. Join a free yoga group where body, breath and mind come together in fully supported reclining yoga positions. Yoga experience is not necessary. Delta Deas Rowing Club has published its “Learn to Row” schedule for summer 2019. All programs take place at Deas Island Regional Park in Delta. Rowing is a “sport for life” and the club offers programs for high school students as well as adults from 18 to 88 years of age. ElderCollege Delta will be offering an exciting lineup of courses for the fall term which begins in early October. The Happy Wanderers are looking for singers, any age, male and female, who would like to join the group for a “singalong” of old type group for seniors four times a month for one hour. Group starts on Sept. 5 and will sing every Thursday at 2 p.m. Call Ann Baranszky at 604-940-0423.

 

Did you have fun playing in a band in high school? If so, dust off your instrument, contact Curt Jantzen, and then join us in Ladner Tuesday evenings starting Sept. 10.  The Delta Music Makers Concert Band is a fun group of adults who love to rehearse and play concerts in the community.
