Leanne Johnson will speak to the South Delta Garden Club on Tuesday, March 17 about new and unusual plants. Given her long career in the B.C. landscape business, this should be an informative talk. The club meets at Ladner Christian Reformed Church, 4594-54A St., at 7 p.m. with speaker at 7:30 p.m. Guests are most welcome for a $5 fee.

 

The Probus Club of South Delta, a non-profit club for retired and semi-retired people who wish to gather with others to enjoy learning and fellowship, will hold its annual general meeting at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18 at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn. Join Tom Bearss and his informal birdwatchers from Delta Nature for a two-and-a-half-hour amble around Boundary Bay Regional Park on Wednesday, March 18 from 9 a.m. to noon. Meet at Cammidge House. Enjoy the abundance of resident and wintering species, and possibly some early migrants. The outing will end with a beverage and snack at Cammidge House. The South Delta Newcomers and Alumnae Club welcomes award-winning writer, best-selling author, historian and musician Aaron Chapman to its Thursday, March 19 meeting at Gallery 1710 at 7:30 p.m. to discuss his latest book, Vancouver After Dark: The Wild History of a City's Night.

Deltassist is hosting SafeTALK, a half-day interactive workshop that provides participants with tools to recognize and engage with individuals who might be having thoughts of suicide, and to connect them with community resources. The Canadian Federation of University Women South Delta meets the fourth Tuesday of the month at Benediction Lutheran Church in Tsawwassen at 7:15 p.m. The next meeting is on Tuesday, March 24.  This meeting is open to the public. Guest speaker will be Saleem Spindari, senior manager of refugees and migrant workers programs at MOSAIC. There will be time for questions and discussion throughout. Membership is open to women to come together to improve the status of women, and to promote human rights, public education, social justice and peace. A university degree is not required. All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner hosts a free community meal every month. The next meal is at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24.

The Tsawwassen Order of Old Bastards (TOOBs) has been quietly helping many South Delta groups and individuals since 1984. The club's fundraising is done through food services at community events such as the Ladner Bandfest and the Tsawwassen Sun Festival. Mental Health Resiliency Support Group offered by Canadian Mental Health Association welcomes anyone who lives with a mental illness/mental health problem such as anxiety or depression. The group provides a safe environment to share your struggles and triumphs. Delta Skating Club is hosting its annual year-end show “Lights, Camera, Action” on Friday, March 13 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Ladner Leisure Centre. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and students. Children under six are free.

ElderCollege Delta in partnership with KinVillage Community Centre presents An Afternoon at the Opera on Tuesday, March 24 from 2 to 3 p.m. at Kin Village Community Centre. This free live event will showcase the great soprano arias in the opera repertoire over the past 400 years and feature three established professionals: Chloe Hurst, soprano; Richard Epp, piano; and Ray Kirkham, trumpet. Loades of Music daytime concert band rehearses Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. at Saviour Lutheran Church, 4737-57th St., Ladner. Registration fee is $50 per year. This year the band would like to add players to its brass section that play either trumpet or trombone.
