Cyclists who want to ride with others for fun and fitness can meet in the Ladner Pioneer Library parking lot Tuesdays and Thursdays weather permitting. The group leaves at 10 a.m. If you can cycle 25, 40 or 65 kilometres at 20 to 30 km/h or aspire to it, contact Bob at 604-943-1603 for more information.

 

Brit Club lunch on Saturday, May 25 at 12:30 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Legion. You don’t have to be British to attend, you just have to like Britain. Lunch will consist of soup, sandwiches, light dessert and coffee at a reasonable cost. Outings to be discussed. Parkinson’s support group meeting will be held on Monday, May 27 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at KinVillage in Tsawwassen. The group is for people living with Parkinson's and/or the people who care for them. For more information call Gloria at 604-948-0156.

Ambassadors-Tsawwassen Mills Toastmasters Club meets every second, third and fourth Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. The theme of the next meeting on Tuesday, May 28 is “Home Cooking.” Club meets at the Tsawwassen Mills Training Room (enter at Entrance 4, turn left past Old Navy, and it's between Yogibo Bean Bags & Yogen Fruz). Ambassadors always welcome guests. Are you recently bereaved with limited shopping and cooking skills? Are you lacking confidence in the kitchen? Would you like to meet other adults in similar circumstances? A home-cook-led demo/hands-on group will teach cooking basics in a safe and fun environment. Not appropriate for those with significant food allergies. The group meets at the Centre for Supportive Care in Ladner from 10 a.m. to noon on four Wednesdays, May 29 to June 19. To register call 604-948-0660. Program is complimentary.

 

Interested in house plants? On Thursday, May 30 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Library, join Taylor Togal from Sunnyside Nursery for House Plants: Bring Nature Indoor and learn about which plants to choose and how to look after them.

 

Keynote speaker Dr. David Bird will present Watching Birds Naked, a humourous but educational slide show on the sensory ecology of birds. It will be presented to Delta Nature on Tuesday, June 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Benediction Lutheran Church in Tsawwassen. All ages welcome to the free event.

 

Have you recently experienced the death of a loved one? Then consider joining a safe and supportive group for bereaved adults where you will have opportunities to share with and listen to others in similar situations, and to learn to navigate your grief process. The group meets at the Centre for Supportive Care in Ladner from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for six Wednesdays beginning June 5. To pre-register, call 604-948-0660. Program is complimentary.

 

Enhance your basic knowledge about dementia at Getting to Know Dementia on Thursday, June 6 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Ladner Pioneer Library. Grab your imagination and get ready to visit a land of magic, monsters and mortals with Dungeons & Dragons in the Tsawwassen Library on Thursday, June 6 from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. New and experienced players are welcome. Join Tom Bearss and his informal birdwatchers for a two-and-a-half-hour amble around Boundary Bay Regional Park on Wednesday, June 12 from 9 a.m. to noon. Enjoy the abundance of resident and summer species, including shorebirds, waterfowl, raptors and smaller birds. The free Delta Nature outing will end with beverage and snack at historic Cammidge House. Delta Deas Rowing Club has published its “Learn to Row” schedule for summer 2019. All programs take place at Deas Island Regional Park in Delta. Rowing is a “sport for life” and the club offers programs for high school students as well as adults from 18 to 88 years of age. Royal Canadian Marine Search & Rescue Station 8 Delta is looking for men and women to join the all-volunteer group dedicated to saving lives on the waters around Delta. Delta Hospice Society offers a Drop-In Relaxation Circle, led by a music therapist, for those living with cancer or serious illness, as well as their family members and friends, every Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Centre for Supportive Care, 4631 Clarence Taylor Cres., Ladner. Program is complimentary.

McKee Seniors Recreation Centre is hosting a free Community Resources, Support Systems & How to Access Them in Delta workshop on Wednesday, May 29 from 11 a.m. to noon. Register by calling 604-946-1411.

 

A presentation titled Understanding Dementia – Coping with Behaviour Changes will be held at KinVillage Community Centre from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29. Pre-registration is required for this presentation for caregivers. McKee Seniors Recreation Centre in Ladner will host a week-long salute to adults 50+ with Seniors Week activities from June 3 to 7. There will be special events daily.

Line Dancing with Susana, Latin and ballroom-style classes, are offered at KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen. Classes are at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, 4 p.m. on Wednesdays and 9 a.m. on Fridays for beginners. No partner required.

 

McKee Seniors Recreation Centre in Ladner is holding Sing-a-long Friday afternoons at 1 p.m. If you enjoy singing for fun, come by and join in.

 

McKee Walking Club walks rain or shine every Tuesday and Friday. Meet at 9 a.m. in the lobby of the McKee Seniors Recreation Centre.

 

McKee Seniors Recreation Centre needs new members for its carpet bowling club that meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Cost is only 50 cents.

 

A Modelers Club meets at McKee Seniors Recreation Centre Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Members build models of all scales, discuss the hobby, and share tips and secrets. Members must have a current McKee membership.

 

SPECIAL EVENTS

Ladner Save-On-Foods will host a shred-a-thon to benefit Delta Gymnastics on Sunday, June 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Protect your identity and your personal information by properly shredding it instead of putting it in your recycling.

 

ARTS

 

Tsawwassen United Church extends a broad invitation to all artists, artisans, musicians and the public to its seventh annual Transformation Arts Fair Weekend that runs all day on Sunday, May 26. The 15th annual Ladner Bandfest will be held June 1 and 2. The event brings amateur community concert bands to Ladner for continuous free 40-minute concerts on two stages throughout the weekend between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. in Memorial Park. Radina Photography and Alongside You, an integrated health clinic, have partnered to produce Celebrating Resilience, a gallery showing combining photography and storytelling to help people celebrate the resilience they have built working through life’s challenges. Showcasing the stories of nine Delta residents, this project seeks to reduce stigma and raise awareness about mental health issues and to raise funds for Alongside You’s Step Forward fund, a program that subsidizes service for those needing financial assistance. Registration is now open for Delta Community Music School’s annual student jazz workshop. Part of the South Delta Jazz Festival, the workshop runs from Tuesday, July 2 to Saturday, July 6.
