The South Delta Newcomers meets on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7:15 p.m. at the Kiwanis Longhouse Gallery, 1710-56th St., Tsawwassen. Award-winning writer Aaron Chapman, who has an in-depth knowledge of Vancouver’s entertainment history with a special interest in the city’s after dark history and underbelly, will present his book - The Last Gang in Town: The Epic Story of the Vancouver Police vs. The Clark Park Gang.

 

Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions is a free six-week workshop at McKee Seniors Recreation Centre on Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon from Oct. 18 to Nov. 22. Self-management strategies for healthy eating, exercise and dealing with stress will be discussed. Persons with any ongoing health condition and caregivers welcome. Delta Community Living Society is hosting a workshop for families supporting people with developmental disabilities on Transitions from School to Adulthood. Ambassadors-Tsawwassen Mills Toastmasters Club meets every second, third, and fourth Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Its next meeting is Oct. 23. Delta Community Living Society is hosting a workshop for families supporting people with developmental disabilities on Registered Disability Savings Plans (RDSPs). IODE Boundary Bay, a Canadian registered charity, is hosting an afternoon of social bridge, including an afternoon tea, on Wednesday, Oct. 31 from 1 to 4 p.m. at All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner. Get a group of four friends together and contact Frances at 604-943-1119 for tickets. Tickets are not sold at the door. Cost to play is $60 per table ($15 per person). 

 

Family Games Afternoon runs every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. until Dec. 8 at the Tsawwassen Library. Unplug and reconnect with your family by playing board games. Enjoy one of the many games provided by the library or bring your favourites.

 

Lego Club runs every Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Library until Nov. 14. Lego Club is a fun afternoon program for kids. Lego provided. Children under five must be accompanied by an adult.

 

If you know or have a child who is grieving the loss of significant person, consider Kids Grieve Too, counsellor-led bereavement support groups for children aged seven to 12. These groups apply expressive arts and play to reduce anxiety and anger, promote healthy expression of difficult emotions, increase understanding of grief and loss, and provide support through connection with others. The next group meets at the Centre for Supportive Care in Ladner on Mondays from 4 to 6 p.m. from Oct. 15 to Nov. 26. For more information or to pre-register, call 604-948-0660. Want to practice your Spanish? Intermediate level Spanish conversation meetings take place in South Delta every Tuesday at 7 p.m. They alternate between the Tsawwassen and Ladner Pioneer libraries. For more information call Aidan at 604-256-4412.

 

The Knitting Sisters, who knit and crochet for charities, meet as a drop-in from 10 a.m. to noon on the first and third Saturdays of the month at McKee Seniors Recreation Centre in Ladner. Cyclists who would like to ride with others can meet at the Ladner Pioneer Library parking lot Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. The ride is especially suited for reasonably fit, mature cyclists but everyone is welcome. Contact Bob at 604-943-1603 for more information.

 

Delta Hospice will offer a Volunteer Training Program from Oct. 1 to Nov. 8. The 30-hour program will run Monday and Thursday mornings, 9:30 a.m. to noon. It provides training for those wishing to join a team of kind, caring volunteers who support people at end of life and in bereavement. Call 604-948-0660 for more information.

 

Delta Hospice Society offers a Drop-In Relaxation Circle, led by a music therapist, for those living with cancer or serious illness, as well as their family members and friends, every Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Centre for Supportive Care, 4631 Clarence Taylor Cres., Ladner. Program is complimentary.

 

The Canadian Lifeboat Institution is interviewing potential volunteers to serve as crew or support personnel for its Delta Lifeboat. Professional training is given in seamanship, navigation, medical, and search and rescue techniques. Contact John at 604-760-5218 for more information.

 

Ambassadors Tsawwassen Mills Toastmasters meet every second and fourth Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. The club meets at the Tsawwassen Mills training room and always welcomes guests. A Modelers Club meets at McKee Seniors Recreation Centre Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Members build models of all scales, discuss the hobby, and share tips and secrets. Members must have a current McKee membership.

 

 

ElderCollege Delta courses are filling up fast but there is still room in some: iPad courses on Ebooks and Web Browsing; Editing Photos from your Camera or Phone; Stress Reduction; Solo Travel; Middle East Update; First Nations Health Authority; Science and Ethics; Violin in the Swing Era; and Images of Motherhood in Art History. An invitation is also extended to all for a free showing of the film Plastic Ocean and for upcoming special presentations ($10 membership required) Delta Geology and Geologic Hazards and Murder and Myth: Jack the Ripper and the Royal Family. The 17th annual Light of Remembrance service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. at Cedar Park Church in Ladner. All are welcome to attend and honour the loss of a loved one. It will be an evening of candlelight, music and reflection.

The Wander Inn Cafe is open on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. at 5545 Ladner Trunk Rd. (inside the church). Enjoy an evening of folk, Celtic, blues and country music as you are entertained by local band The Karmichaels and by Bruce Heavenor (New West). Entrance is by a suggested $7 donation which covers the entertainment, beverages and goodies.

 

If you love music and have a brass, woodwind or percussion instrument, then join Loades of Music Concert Band. Share the joy of making music with other adult musicians.
