Crime beat: Vehicle causes $80,000 damage by crashing into Tsawwassen home

The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:

Tsawwassen

Sept. 24, 9:46 p.m., 1400-block of 56th Street: Police were called to a report of a vehicle that had been broken into. The vehicle was parked in an underground parking lot where the driver side window had been pried open. The steering wheel had been damaged and the ignition had been ripped apart.

Sept, 26, 9 p.m., 900-block of Bayview Drive: Police were called to a theft from a vehicle that occurred overnight. The vehicle was parked in front of the owner’s residence unlocked. The suspect(s) rifled through the glove box and stole a hands-free device, sunglasses, 2 CD racks with 12 CDs, loose change and insurance papers. The owner was advised to contact Trans Union and Equifax for possible identity theft.

Sept. 27, 8:59 a.m., 5100-block of Galway Drive: Police were called to a report of a theft from a vehicle. The vehicle was parked unlocked in the driveway of the owner’s home. The suspect(s) had stolen a baby monitor, sunglasses and an Amazon device. The value of these stolen items was approximately $200. There was no damage to the vehicle as the doors were unlocked.

Sept. 27, 8:58 a.m., 1500-block of Beach Grove Road: Police were dispatched to another report of a theft from a vehicle. The suspects broke into the vehicle while it was parked at the home owner’s residence. Insurance papers and two children’s bikes were stolen. The total value of stolen goods is approximately $500. Police recommended the phone application “Garage 529” to the owner to have on record serial numbers for bikes.


Sept. 27, 10:42 p.m., 900-block of 56A Street: Police were called to a report of vehicle that had crashed into a home. A vehicle originally on 56th Street had left that street, driven over the sidewalk, through a fence and the yard, and through the exterior wall of the home, stopping inside a bedroom. Fortunately no one was struck by the vehicle. Homeowners reported thinking an explosion had occurred at the rear of the home. By the time the homeowners were able to inspect the vehicle, it was unoccupied. Police attended the home of the registered owner of the vehicle to find her at home. Shortly after, a female arrived back at the scene. The female along with the registered owner both admitted to being in the vehicle during the crash. Damages are estimated at $80,000 or more.

Sept. 28, 4:58, p.m., Highway 17 and 80th Street Connector: Police were called to a report of a driver being potentially under the influence. The driver was seen swerving and driving slowly. Police located the driver and conducted a traffic stop. A breath sample was issued and the driver failed the test twice. A 90-day immediate roadside prohibition was served and the vehicle was towed.

Ladner
Sept. 22, 4:36 p.m., 4300-block of Arthur Drive: Police were called to a report that a driver was rear-ended by another driver who appeared to be intoxicated. Upon police arrival, nine breath samples were taken from the driver. Ultimately, the driver was issued a 90 day immediate roadside prohibition. His vehicle was towed and impounded for 30 days.  

Sept. 24, 10:18 p.m., 5700-block of Ladner Trunk Road: A vehicle was observed speeding down Ladner Trunk Road and then swerving hard to the left for no apparent reason. A traffic stop was conducted and police observed the driver as having bloodshot, watery eyes, and an odour of liquor on their breath. The driver admitted to consuming alcohol 20 minutes previous to the stop. A breath sample was taken and the driver was issued an immediate roadside prohibition.       

Sept. 24, 6:41 p.m., 5100-block of Central Avenue: Police were called to a report of a theft from a vehicle. The vehicle was parked unlocked where the suspect(s) stole a laser level valued at approximately $300. Items were seized from the truck for the police forensic team to further investigate. The owner advised police he would be installing cameras to prevent future thefts.

Sept. 26, 8:55 a.m., 5300-block of Augusta Place: Police were called to yet another report of a theft from a vehicle. The vehicle was left unlocked. Suspect(s) stole a wallet from the centre console containing a Visa card, BCAA membership card and a number of gift cards valued at approximately $500.
