An upcoming ElderCollege Delta presentation will explore the dark side of the fashion industry, particularly the manufacture of ready-to-wear fashion lines, so called fast fashion, in Italy.

Always a centre for high fashion, Italy now plays a major role in the manufacture of ready-to-wear fashion. This industry has enjoyed a widely recognized “Made in Italy” reputation, only recently challenged by China.

As a result, Chinese migrants to Italy have become key players, filling orders for fast fashion garments for Italian and other European clients in both legal and illegal workshops.

Dr. Gaoheng Zang, UBC professor and cultural critic, will examine the Chinese migrant-managed fast fashion industry in Italy during a presentation on Saturday, Nov. 30 from 10 a.m. to noon at Cedar Park Church in Ladner.

The presentation is free for ElderCollege Delta members; annual membership is $10. To register call 604-943-0262, email [email protected] or register online at eldercollegedelta.wildapricot.org.
