Author and historian Chris Gainor will explore a controversial chapter in Canadian history in the next ElderCollege Delta special presentation.

Who Killed the Avro Arrow? will be held on Saturday, April 13 from 10 a.m. to noon at Cedar Park Church in Ladner.

Gainor is a historian of technology specializing in space exploration and aeronautics. He is the author of five books, notably Arrows to the Moon: Avro’s Engineers and the Space Race.

The Avro Arrow vaulted Canada into the front ranks of the world’s military aircraft design and manufacturing as the Cold War pitted world powers against each other. It brought together the most brilliant minds Canada had to offer, and more, in the quest for a fighter jet full of cutting edge technology capable of flying at twice the speed of sound.

But less than a year after the Arrow’s first test flight in 1958, the program was cancelled and the few existing Avro Arrows and all their specs were put to the torch in a controversy that reverberates even today.

The presentation is free for all members of ElderCollege Delta. Those who aren’t members can attend by taking out a $10 annual membership, which includes free admission to other special events in April.

Pre-registration is required by visiting ElderCollegeDelta/KinVillage, emailing [email protected] or calling 604-943-0262.
