Chinese food take out has been one of my favourite meals since I was a kid.
I remember Sundays being relaxed, my entire family was at home preparing for the week, and we would order in so many delicious dishes to enjoy before the hectic Monday began.
It was always a meal you would eat until you were so full yet managed to make space for a sneaky second helping just before bed.
And don’t get me started on leftovers. Aren’t they the best?
I was in the mood for a variety of dishes the other day, so decided to check out what some of local restaurants offered for ‘Dinner for One ‘combos.
First off, we have Best Garden located in Tsawwassen.
Here you may choose either an egg roll or soup as well as two or three items from a list of 15 dishes.
I went with the classic meat, veggie starch.
To start, I had won ton soup, which was tasty noodles in a small bowl of broth.
I also went with the egg foo young, mixed veggies and sweet and sour chicken balls.
The egg foo young came in an omelette style form yet was so light and tasty as it was filled with sprouts and onions.
The veggies were nice and crunchy, and the chicken was almost like a round donut stuffed with chicken, covered in delicious sauce.
Next up, Ocean Palace, also in Tsawwassen.
You have a choice of combo A, or b, or three items from A or B.
Here I chose prawn chow mien, sweet and sour pork and chicken with vegetables.
The chow mien had a slight crunch and was very tasty with almost a subtle soy flavour.
The pork had almost a smoky taste to it. I found the veggies with chicken were cooked well and included big, juicy chunks of chicken.
And finally we have Ming’s Court in Ladner.
I went with the chicken fried rice, sweet and sour pork again and beef and broccoli.
The rice was nice and fluffy, while the beef and broccoli had a nice flavour, but the showstopper was the saucy sweet and sour pork.
Chinese food is such a fun meal because your combo can change each time you order.
Ideally, if I could make my own combo, I would take the egg foo young from Best Garden, the crunchy chow mien from Ocean Palace and some saucy sweet and sour pork from Ming Court.
Since unfortunately that’s not an option, it looks like I will just have to rotate ordering from each restaurant, and that it’s perfectly fine with me!
