A North Delta high school is once again calling on the community to help support is annual food drive.

Since 1992 the staff and students at Delview Secondary have held a canned food drive called Thanks-4-Giving. This year’s food drive will be held on Oct. 11 where students will go door-to-door collecting non-perishable food items from residents.

Deltassist and the Surrey Food Bank will benefit from the food drive.

Each of these organizations feed those in need and count on the school’s donation of more than 15,000 food items collected in one night to help support their efforts in the winter. Without the contributions of our students, staff, and families in the North Delta area and beyond, the number of food items would be much lower. Many families in the area (including some who are a part of our school community) rely on our support every year.

“We have hundreds of student and staff volunteers to make sure the event runs smoothly and that we reach as many homes as we can to collect food and cash donations,” said Delview in a press release. “When the donations arrive back at the school later in the night, we have hundreds of volunteers, sorting, boxing, counting, and moving the food so that they can be picked up by Deltassist and Surrey Food Bank the next morning.”

This year Delview hopes to exceed expectations by collecting more food items than ever for the people in our community.

“Being a part of the school community, we are well aware of how food and nutritional health can affect learning and the success of students and families in our school system as these are issues we tend to every day. We are asking for the public’s help to collect non-perishable food items. On the night of Oct. 11 if you are in the Delview School area in North Delta, our hundreds of student volunteers will be canvassing the neighbourhood and collecting your donations from your homes.”
