Kids take the lead at The Lyrical Note Creative Arts Studio in Ladner.
"I think that children learn when they take ownership of something," says Lorrie Holmes, program director at the studio, which has been running for a year.
She offers programs for preschoolers to preteens.
When kids invite her into their play, Holmes says, "I find that I can hold their attention longer, it's exciting, it's fun and they want to come back."
Kids can create their own musical stories, analyze their own material, make their own props and put together performances.
"Basically the whole idea is that the children play their way into structure. Everything is project based but they do their research through play," says Holmes, a children's author and songwriter.
Preschool age kids can act out traditional stories, nursery rhymes and fairytales and also get a chance to make their own sounds with percussion instruments.
Holmes says she's excited to start drop-in sessions for preschool age children
beginning next week. They combine elements from all of her preschool programs, including musical storytelling and puppet making, she notes.
They will run from Monday to Thursday with two 45-minute morning classes each day.
Other examples of programs include a Friday night drop-in jazzercise karaoke party and an after school songwriting group where kids can write their own songs and perform out in the community. Holmes notes she's not taking on any more after school songwriting students right now, but will be later on in the year.
