Inclusive employment leaders mix at Delta event

Representatives from businesses across the Lower Mainland came together at Delta Golf Club on Oct. 22 to celebrate Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Representatives from inclusive employers, including AMJ Auto Group, Café Madras, City of Delta, Clearly Contacts, Delta Golf Club, Delta Police Department, Dexterra, FYidoctors, Kinsmen Place Lodge, Lighthouse Church Ladner, Ocean Trailer, PepsiCo Beverages Canada, The Salvation Army, Sodexo Canada, Wilson Rasmussen LLP and DCLS, gathered at Delta Golf Club to celebrate Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Representatives from businesses across the Lower Mainland came together at Delta Golf Club on Oct. 22 to celebrate Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Delta Community Living Society Solutions Employment partnered with Rotary at Work and MOSAIC Employment Services to host an event to recognize businesses that have committed to hiring people with developmental disabilities.

FYidoctors vice president Nancy Morison explained her company’s experience at the event.

“Our organization has hired two people with developmental disabilities at our warehouse on Annacis Island. Our journey started with the need to find someone who would enjoy the job even though the work can be repetitive. We had warehouse assistant roles for which it was challenging to fill or retain staff. We hired Cyrus and Graham to work at the warehouse and the journey evolved.”

FYidoctors employee Cyrus Bahador also spoke at the event: “I love working at FYi because each day I learn new things, they encourage me to do more things… at FYi I feel happier and better each day more I go to work.”

Morison said the dedication and abilities of the two employees shifted the company’s mindset and gave it a new perspective on hiring people with developmental disabilities. She said the journey is made even more meaningful when you hear things like, “The job has changed my life.”

Delta Community Living Society employment strategy manager Annette Borrows said the organization works with job seekers and local businesses to make employment matches.

“We have a roster of people with diverse abilities who are ready, willing and able to work,” Borrows said. “And research has shown that businesses that hire people with developmental disabilities experience lower rates of turnover among all employees, reducing the cost of turnover for the business.”
