Major infrastructure work is underway on a busy stretch of road in South Delta, while there’s also a temporary closure of a road nearby.

Metro Vancouver water main work, which will be followed by city road and utility improvements, has commenced on 53rd Street/Arthur Drive and along 28th Avenue.

The extensive improvement projects are expected to take more than a year to complete.

On March 4 Delta council endorsed a plan to temporarily close 34B Avenue at Arthur Drive to accommodate the work. To maintain access to the farming and commercial properties, a detour route will be in effect via Deltaport Way.

The city has also notified residents to expect traffic disruptions on 53 Street, just north of 28 Avenue.

The Metro work will likely not be completed until later this summer, according to the city’s engineering department, and the Delta works will commence afterward. Some of the Delta project could be completed in this year but completion will likely be in 2020.

The city project will include a new traffic signal at 53rd Street and 28th Avenue, roadway widening on the west side of 53rd Street to provide dedicated southbound right and left turn lanes, and a new dedicated westbound right turn lane on 28th Avenue. There will also be new separated cycle lanes, bus stop improvements and roadway rehabilitation.

Delta, meanwhile, is in the planning stages of major improvements on 56th Street between Highway 17 and 28th Avenue.
