Kids can race too during Tour de Delta weekend

It won’t only be the pros who will be racing around the streets of Delta this weekend. As in past years, youngsters will have opportunities to take to the courses at events being held in conjunction with all three Tour de Delta races.

It won’t only be the pros who will be racing around the streets of Delta this weekend.

As in past years, youngsters will have opportunities to take to the courses at events being held in conjunction with all three Tour de Delta races.

There will be a Kids Crit (short for criterium) on Friday and Saturday afternoons. Once the courses are closed to traffic, but prior to the evening's races, children will be given an opportunity to take a spin in the non-competitive events.

In North Delta on Friday, six- to eight-year-olds will start at 5:45 p.m. and cover a half-kilometre course; nine- to 11-year-olds get going at 5:50 p.m. and will make one lap of the 1.2-kilometre loop.

In Ladner Village on Saturday, there will be events for three different age groups, including for those under six who will ride the finishing straightaway along Delta Street at 3:45 p.m. Six- to eight-year-olds will make one loop of the 900-metre course at 4 p.m., while the older group will do two full loops beginning at 4:15 p.m.

A youth race will also be held in Ladner for 12- to 15-year-olds. The race begins at 4:30 p.m. and will see the young cyclists ride the Ladner Criterium course for 20 minutes.

A Tsawwassen Kids Race will be held at Dennison Park on Sunday afternoon. Six- to eight-year-olds will do two laps starting at 2:30 p.m., while nine- to 11-year-olds will do four laps at 2:55 p.m.

All events are free. Helmets are mandatory and bikes must be in safe working condition.
