Minister's Minute: He is good and happy to bless

Napoleon said, “If you vote for me all your wildest dreams will come true!”

This, of course, being Napoleon Dynamite of movie-fame and not Napoleon Bonaparte of military-fame.

This quote originated as advice from the sidekick and guide Pedro.

Despite the many laughs it has produced and many re-quotes since airing in 2004 it is strikingly similar to a line from a song written by David 3,000 years earlier.

“Take delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4).

I believe we succumb too easily to an image of a God who doesn’t want us to have fun or enjoy life. The god we envision is typically angry and bent on inflicting us with pain unless we appease him/her somehow.

The Apostle Paul echoes David in writing of God’s blessings as being rich and lavish (Ephesians 1). If you are exploring spiritual life, but afraid that if you include God in the equation it will end somehow in misery, then may I encourage you to think differently?

A fair examination of God will show that he is good and happy to bless. I would even go so far as to say that if you set your affections on him then all your wildest dreams will come true!
