Minister's Minute: Knowing about God vs Knowing God

How much do you know about God? Maybe quite a lot. You may have read the Bible, memorized the creeds, read volumes of theology.

The truth is, though, if you don’t know the love of God, you don’t know God.

Jesus is the embodiment and ultimate expression of God’s love. The love of God poured out upon the world through Jesus is what the whole story of the Bible is about, summarized in its most famous passage. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not parish but may have eternal life.” (John 3:16).

God loves the world — the very world that has consistently rejected God. Even after it turned away from God time and again, God did not reject ancient Israel. Even when human beings put Jesus to death on the cross, God did not reject us. In fact, God used this horrible event to forgive us, and gift us with eternal life.

God loves you! You may believe that you have sinned too much and made too many mistakes for God to love you. Think again.

Consider the words of St. Paul: “The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners — of whom I am the foremost.” (1 Timothy 1: 15). Paul came to know the love of God first-hand, and so can you!
