Pair of events next month in South Delta to put Birds in Focus

For the eighth consecutive year, two popular Birds in Focus events will take place early next month in South Delta.

Organized and co-sponsored by the Delta Naturalists Society, the Boundary Bay Park Association, the City of Delta and Metro Vancouver Parks, the events will be held on Saturday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre and on Sunday, April 14 at historic Cammidge House in Boundary Bay Regional Park.

The visual presentation evening on Saturday, April 6 is not only for photographers and bird watchers, but others who enjoy seeing spectacular photographs presented by three talented and skilled photographers and naturalists.

The program begins with an opening reception and light refreshments, where attendees can tour the arts centre and see an array of works by local photographers and artists.

The main program starts at 7:30 p.m.

Featured speakers include Ron Long, who was a professional photographer at Simon Fraser University for 36 years, much of that time in the Biological Sciences Department. In retirement he travels regularly, photographing nature, and has worked for the last eight years to preserve one of his favourite wildflower locations in northern B.C.

Liron Gertsman, who presented last year,has been a nature lover and photographer since childhood. Still a teenager, he has won multiple awards for his photography.

Yuri Choufouris a nature and travel photographer who has also been fascinated by the natural world since early childhood. He has a diploma in professional photography and has won an award for photojournalism.

The family-friendly event is an excellent opportunity to introduce youngsters to nature. Admission is $5, payable at the door. Pre-registration is recommended by calling 604-943-9437 or email: jhanson@delta.ca.

The Sunday, April 14 photography workshop goes from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Local photographer Jack MacDonald will preside over the workshop made popular by the late Ursula Easterbrook. His presentation will explore basic and advanced photography skills, techniques, digital aspects, equipment selection, places to go and more.

There is a maximum of 20 participants (minimum age 12) and advance registration is required by calling 604-432-6359. A fee of $20 will be collected at the door.

Participants should bring theircamera, memory card, tripod, and anything else that might be needed to photograph birds. Following the presentation there will be a walk and practice session in the park.
