A new garden season opens full of hope and promise with the annual Ladner Seedy Saturday & Garden Expo.

Hosted by the Ladner Community Garden Society, Seedy Saturday returns Saturday, March 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at All Saints Anglican Church (4755 Arthur Dr.).

The event will feature many garden vendors, the ever-popular seed swap and guest speakers.

Kirstin Crouch of the Ladner Community Garden Society said the theme of this year’s Seedy Saturday is bees.

Two guest speakers will be on hand: Julia Common at 10:30 a.m. with Hear the Buzz and Brian Campbell at 12:30 p.m. with Easy ways to help Bees in Your Garden.

“Bringing bees into your garden is such an integral part of gardening, pollinating our crops and without them we probably wouldn’t have any food,” said Crouch.

Vendors will be set up in the main hall, selling everything from seeds to plants and other garden-related items. There will also be a new vendor selling garden beds and trellises ideal for small-space gardeners.

“We will have someone doing container gardens, Westham Island Herb Farm, West Coast Seeds, and a very popular lady who sells out every year with her succulents, so it’s a great range of vendors,” said Crouch.

“Our seed swap is also very popular. I organize that table. If you grew something last year and didn’t use it all or didn’t like it, you can package those up and bring it in to get something else. This seems to grow every year.”

Seedy Saturday is a fundraiser for the community garden, which donates produce to charitable causes, including All Saints Anglican Church’s monthly community meal.

Admission to Seedy Saturday is by donation. For more details see: www.ladnercommunitygarden.blogspot.com.
