The IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s in South Delta will be honouring Ron and Geramy Powell this year.

The event provides an opportunity to remember or honour people who have been touched by dementia, while fundraising to support those living with the disease today. Each of the 21 events across B.C. is dedicated to an honouree – an individual or group affected by dementia, or who has valuably contributed to the lives of people living with the disease.

Geramy Powell laughs about the “Ronisms” – the stories and practical jokes that comprise her husband’s quirky sense of humour and illustrate what a positive outlook he has always had throughout his 30-year career as a police officer and in the seven years since he was diagnosed with dementia.

“Ron said, ‘Everybody has something, and this is what I’ve got’,” says Geramy. “We can’t be ashamed. We have to face this head-on.”

Ron and Geramy connected with First Link dementia support and have taken advantage of several Alzheimer Society of B.C. programs and services over the years, including support groups where Ron’s contagious positivity continues to be a huge help to others facing dementia. They have also found comfort and empowerment through fundraising.

Ron is a fourth-degree black belt in Judo, proud father and grandfather and a man who values his close relationships with family, friends and neighbours above all else.

“He’s a wonderful storyteller with a wonderful attitude about life,” Geramy says.

Funds raised at the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s help enable Alzheimer Society of B.C. support and education in South Delta and help facilitate research into the causes of and the cure for the disease, so we can look towards a world without dementia.
