The Word Racers from Southpointe Academy are this year’s winners of the Delta District Reading Link Challenge.

More than 90 students in grades 4 and 5 from 15 elementary schools from across Delta competed in the finals at Pebble Hill Traditional School April 12.

Teams of six began reading six selected books last November. In February and March, teams participated in a school challenge.

In all, more than 300 Delta students took part in the overall challenge.

At the Delta finals, teams had to collaboratively answer three rounds of 10 questions based on this year’s chosen books: Stella by Starlight, Ungifted, Land of Forgotten Girls, The World According to Humphrey, A Boy Called Bat and Howard Wallace, P.I.

The Word Racers – a team of Grade 4 students that includes Adam Mackay, Ariella Batty, Ethan Chung, Ryan Huang, Ryan Li and Mina Stefanovic – came out on top.

They advanced to the Community Challenge at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Langley that featured teams representing the Fraser Valley Regional Library’s nine district areas.

That competition is set for Wednesday night, April 24.

The top two teams advance to compete against other regions of the Lower Mainland for the title of Grand Challenge champions at the Harris Barn in Ladner on May 1.
