It’s a piece of Delta history 50 years in the making.

The Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society celebrates 50 years in 2019. To help commemorate this significant milestone, past president Yvonne Chard has put together a book of memories.

The soft cover 100-page book, recounts the history of the auxiliary and the hundreds of dedicated volunteers who have helped shape and support Delta Hospital these many years.

All current auxiliary members have received a copy. The book is available at the hospital gift shop for $20.

Chard said the project has truly been a labour of love.

“It was almost four and a half years ago, maybe five when I started. I really didn’t know what the end product would be, but I wanted it for the anniversary,” said Chard. “I said I would compile the history and I actually have a lot of stuff that is not in the book. For years the members were very diligent about keeping photos and the Optimist clippings, so that was my main source plus minutes and annual reports.”

For about eight months Diane Lee came into the Optimist and gathered clippings, while Maxine Geddes helped Chard with additional scanning and research.

There were also several volunteers who helped with typing, photos, short stories and advice.

“We didn’t know how much information to put in and then I thought we have all this so we should use it,” said Chard. “Overall, I’m very happy with how it came together. Everyone seems very pleased with the product and has said it is wonderful.

“I enjoyed it. Once you start working on all this information, I felt I really got to know some of the people who were there in the beginning and you got the feeling that you knew them and you actually see how much they cared.”
