As summer approaches we are slowly readying our yards for outdoor entertaining.

There are a few ways in which you can turn a simple backyard into a superior outdoor living space. The main idea here is the creation of defined areas within a yard for different purposes. Many homeowners will only utilize one area, often near a patio door, and leave the remaining yard unused.

Creating separate areas that are inviting and interesting will allow homeowners to enjoy more of their yards.

Some examples of defined spaces are dining areas, lounge areas, reading areas, and play areas.

Although creating separate defined spaces sounds easy enough, it is important to integrate them with one another, or they may become lost and in turn unused.

The use of both hardscape and softscape is essential when integrating spaces into the overall yard.

Hardscapes are things such as stonework, paved areas and other structured man-made landscaping.

Softscapes are elements such as garden beds, shrubbery, trees and other organic landscaping.

Either of these elements on their own can work, but combining them into one cohesive space can really made a statement and create a beautiful aura and ambience.

Another important piece of the puzzle is lighting.

Without suitable lighting outdoor spaces can seem unfinished. A beautiful area in the day can turn into a dark unwelcoming space in the evening if the appropriate lighting is not used. Linking spaces with lit paths, can offer a sense of destination and connection between areas of different function.

Furniture and accessories are the final touches that truly complete an outdoor room.

Adding outdoor area rugs under a table or a seating group can help to define the space, and truly make it feel as though a room has been created. Adding décor and accessories, such as pillows, table trimmings, placemats etc can really add to the overall ambience.

With any type of space created, don't be afraid to decorate and accessorize in the same manner as is appropriate inside, just be sure to choose materials that are suitable for outdoor use. The more complete a space is, the more comfortable it will be to spend time in and therefore, the more it will be used.
