Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years, offering the promise of a healthier body, mind and spirit. But what happens when you take the 12-step recovery program and combine it with yoga?
What recovering addict Nikki Meyers discovered was life-saving.
In 2004, Meyers launched Yoga of 12-Step Recovery (Y12SR) based on her own personal struggles with addiction, and now Y12SR classes are available in cities throughout North America.
Y12SR was developed as an adjunct to the 12-step program, as another tool to support addiction recovery, not a replacement. It supports the addict in recognizing the signs of relapse at the level of feeling and sensation in the body and gives them a set of tools and practices to help restore balance, before the relapse.
This combined cognitive and somatic approach supports a person to find nervous system regulation in sustainable, non-destructive ways.
With thanks to Alongside You, Little House Society can offer these classes at the Little House in Tsawwassen.
“We’re excited to partner with Little House Society to offer this valuable service through the Y12SR classes because it’s another way to support the recovery community here in South Delta,” said Andrew Neufeld, co-founder and executive director of Alongside You.
“Recovery involves the body, mind and spirit, and Y12SR is a great way to harness all of these aspects at the same time, and promote a life worth living.”
Little House jumped at the opportunity to hold Y12SR classes.
“We aim to do everything we can do to support the recovery community, and this program complements the other group recovery programs currently provided at Little House,” said Little House executive director Joni Wright.
