Grease is the word at the SDSS Equinox Theatre

Performances start this Saturday, Feb. 25

Their performance will be sure to have you singing and dancing along to your favourite tunes from the 1978 film.

South Delta Secondary’s Equinox Theatre presents Grease as this year’s musical production. The curtain rises this Saturday, Feb. 25 with a special $5 sing-along matinee preview at 1 p.m. Evening performances run from Tuesday, Feb. 28 to Saturday, March 4 at 7 p.m. nightly.

You will feel like you stepped right back into 1959 with familiar characters Danny and the Greasers and of course the swanky Pink Ladies welcoming the newcomer Sandy to Rydell High. The show features favourite tunes such as Summer Nights and You’re the One that I Want along with others from the Broadway musical that you may not know as well.

Artistic director, Jennifer McKee, says the musical theatre, stage craft and pit band students have been working on the production since September. The production showcases two casts, two crews and one band with more than 75 students involved.

“This year we have students playing various roles in both casts – some go between two different principal roles in addition to ensemble roles,” said McKee. “It’s been quite a challenge for students to learn multiple characters and memorize dialogue with a very specific jargon in this era, but they are rising to the occasion with lots of passion.

“It’s important that our students continue to be challenged year after year and look after each other well through performance.”

Grade 12 student Grace Edwards-Ryland plays Rizzo in Cast Blue. She says that she is “enjoying her time and the people she gets to work with.”

The role itself has been a “rollercoaster” to learn as she is new to playing such a demanding part in a show of this size but the journey has been “amazing.”

Petra Frisch, an international student from Germany in Grade 11, plays Sandy in Cast Yellow.

“Everyone is getting excited for the opening shows and can’t wait to entertain everyone,” says Frisch.

Tickets for the show are $20 for adults, $10 for students/seniors and $5 for children under five. Purchase tickets online at: sdssequinoxtheatre.eventbrite.com, call the school at 604-943-7532, or purchase tickets for cash only at the door.
