Don Levers will be visiting Ladner with his new crime fiction title next week.
The author has penned Loot for the Taking, a book inspired by the 1977 robbery of the Vancouver Safety Deposit Vaults.
"I always wondered what would have happened if it was guys like you and I, just ordinary guys, that had done this," he says.
Levers explains the culprits pulled off what should have been the perfect heist, drilling through concrete and steel, ransacking 1,200 safety deposit boxes, only to be caught later at the Vancouver airport with "bulging bags of boodle," according to a May 1977 article in the Province. Levers, 61, an Edmonton resident, lived in Vancouver at the time of the robbery.
"The story was finished and written in my head 30 years ago," he explains. "But it was a matter of getting it down on paper, or the computer, to something that was hopefully legible."
Levers will be at Black Bond Books in Trenant Park Square in Ladner on Tuesday, Aug. 29 from 1 to 4 p.m.
