Point Roberts residents are welcoming Canadians to a popular community market that will running twice this month, including this Saturday.

“Your Local Small Market” will be open Saturday (Dec. 4) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Point Roberts Community Centre. Vendors will include Ollie Otter Bakery, Garden Stand/Slow Botanicals with handmade wreaths, soap, skin balms and more, Royal Boho Studio, local quilters and candle makers, local published authors, designers of clothing, Cecil G with her handmade comics, and others.

The market was the idea of Chwynyn Vaughan and Kathleen Friedman.

It was back in the early month of the COVID-19 pandemic when Vaughan decided to take her passion for gardening a step further by selling plants, produce and homemade organic products from a roadside “Garden Stand” built by her husband on the family property. The response was more than she ever could have imagined and eventually led to the launching of an e-commerce site. Friedman runs Ollie Otter Bakery that features everything from homemade breads to pies.

The pair thought why not create a single-day event to feature all the talents of Point Roberts? The turnout for the opening market dates was terrific and now they look forward to seeing Canadians too now that border restrictions have eased further.

“It is amazing what a success Your Local Small Market has been considering what a small population we have been drawing on,” said Vaughan. “Kathleen and I are really excited about the open border and welcoming residents of Tsawwassen and Ladner.

“We will be collecting monetary donations to enter a raffle for a gift pack of organic small batch soap by Slow Botanicals. Proceeds from this raffle will go to the Point Roberts Volunteer Fire Department.”

A second market this month will take place Dec. 18, also from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
