South Delta flair for this year’s Theatre Under the Stars

Cats and School of Rock will feature lots of local talent

Theatre goers who will be enjoying this year’s offerings from Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) will likely see a lot of familiar faces.

South Delta will be well-represented in the casts of CATS and School of Rock.

Recognized as one of the longest-running musicals of all time, CATS is a musical theatre classic performed entirely in song. The music relies heavily on dance to tell its story about a tribe of exceptional cats called the Jellicles, based on T.S. Eliot’s whimsical Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.

CATS director Ashley Wright, choreographer Julie Murphy, and music director Sean Bayntun will bring a fresh new vision to the TUTS stage, featuring a contemporary, Vancouver-inspired urban alley setting and characters clothed in highly stylized costumes.

South Deltans in CATS includes: Janet Gigliotti, Heather Thwaites and Julia Kelleway.

School of Rock is based on the 2003 hit Jack Black film of the same name and has toured across the globe since its critically acclaimed Broadway debut in 2015. The musical follows wannabe rock star, Dewey Finn, who fakes his way into a teacher role at an uptight private school to make some quick cash.

Featuring an ensemble of talented youth musicians from School of Rock Vancouver, director Tracey Power, choreographer Matthew Rossoff, and music director Eliza De Castro are thrilled to bring the “rabble-rousing rock score” to the TUTS stage.

South Deltans to note in the cast include: Madison Tchir and Eric Timuss.

TUTS is on stage from July 5 to Aug. 24 at Stanley Park’s iconic Malkin Bowl.

Early bird tickets are now available through June 19, starting at $20. For tickets and further information, visit: tuts.ca.
