Zumba Dance Party will double as a fundraiser

Money will be used to build homes in Ecuadorian village

A fun workout planned for a local gym this weekend will also raise funds for a worthy cause.

On Sunday, April 28, Stacey Beeksma and Lisa Kirby, who are both certified Zumba fitness instructors, are hosting a Zumba Fitness Dance Party Fundraiser at United Mixed Martial Arts in Tsawwassen.

The event is a fundraiser for Maddie Parks, a local resident who is travelling to Ecuador in early May with Help Learn Discover to help build housing in Camerones, a low-income shrimping village.

The village currently has no running water or electricity and Parks, along with other Help Learn Discover volunteers, will build homes for families living in the village.

The money raised at Sunday's fundraiser will go directly to building supplies.

It takes approximately $5,000 to build one home.

Parks said she hopes the event will raise $1,000.

The doors at United Mixed Martial Arts Studio, 107-5405-12th Ave., will open at 4: 30 p.m. and the hour-long Zumba Fitness Party will start at 5 p.m.

Zumba is a dance fitness program that combines Latin and international music.

It is a barefoot class and all attending are reminded to dress appropriately for an intense workout and to bring bottled water.
