Sourcing local, supporting local and shopping local – these of the philosophies of the latest farmers market to open in South Delta.
Harvey Randhawa and his family opened up the Boundary Bay Farm Market earlier this month, which is on their family-run blueberry farm on 112th Street in Delta.
The Market is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and features their home grown blueberries, fresh Okanagan cherries, organic and natural self-care products, house blend herbal teas, honey, handmade soy candles, snacks such as Hardbite Chips and they will soon be carrying vegetables including some surprises from their own garden.
“My dad and my uncle own the farm and we moved here in 2005 and have been farming blueberries ever since,” said Randhawa. “We saw other people’s stands up, and we wanted to bring a B.C. market to Delta that sells all B.C. products, so if you look around we have organic personal care products, GMO-free chips – all made in B.C. and pretty much all within 20 km from here. We wanted the farm market to also have a bit of a modern twist.”
Opening day was July 1.
“We had a blueberry stand about six years ago, so this is a new venture,” he said. “The produce we will be having in the coming weeks we are looking to get from Delta. The blueberries are of course ours and as we get going we want to expand the product base, expand our market tent with the idea of having a much larger market with produce, meats, flowers – all local and really make this a full-stop market experience.”
He said it was important to them that the market was a made in B.C. experience.
“When you go down to the States, they have 100 people making organic personal care products. They have their support and fan base. We want to support local,” he said. “We have one lady who has her personal care product business out of her home and that’s how she supports her family and her life, so we want to support her and have our customers support her and her products. It’s all about supporting local, supporting B.C.”
The Boundary Bay Farm Market is located at 5121 112th St. in Delta.
