Matt Wheeler says he always thought it would be fun to have a quilting store.

And now he does.

The new owner of the Quilted Bear in Ladner Village says he jumped into the opportunity with both feet, acquiring the business earlier this year.

"I've always done quilting as far back as I can remember and I always thought it would be nice to own a quilting store so I could be around people who do quilting and sewing."

He says owning the quilting store has lived up to his expectations and notes he's been really busy so far. Wheeler, a nurse by trade, also works at Delta Hospital four days a week.

Since taking over Wheeler has made the store "lighter and airier" by painting, moving things around and doing some other refurbishing.

Besides fabric, books, magazines and other equipment, the Quilted Bear offers classes and Sunday "sit and sews."

The store is also holding a quilting retreat getaway in November at Harrison Hot Springs. Wheeler says it will be all-inclusive trip with things like meals and spa treatment included.
