Samson: A new option

Upstart tug company using new, locally-built boat

Delta-based Samson Tug Boats is offering another option when it comes to ship-berthing services on the Fraser River.

The upstart company has been operating for about a month.

"We saw the opportunity for competition here - the customers had been asking for it for some time. Our goal is to provide the best quality ship berthing service in British Columbia," says managing director Gordon Yahn.

Yahn and fellow managing director Brian McWhirter have over 50 years of experience in the marine industry.

Samson uses a new ASD tug boat that was built in Maple Ridge.

"The boat will move sideways at seven knots. It's a hot rod, it really is," says Yahn.

McWhirter says the boat has special features on it.

"The fact that this type of sophisticated equipment can be built here in B.C. says something about our industry - something very positive," he says.

Samson has around seven employees and another tug on the way as well.

"We will be growing. We'll be doubling that, employing more British Columbians as the other boat comes online and we get busier," says Yahn.
