80th St. overpass construction celebrated

A number of different levels of government and stakeholders came together last week to celebrate the construction of the 80th Street overpass.

"This project is part of our government's commitment to creating jobs and stimulating economic growth in the region," said federal Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway Ed Fast. "Once completed, this grade separation will enhance rail operations and accommodate increased road and rail movements along the Roberts Bank rail corridor, an integral part of Canada's Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor initiative."

Fast was joined by Delta Mayor Lois Jackson, Richmond East MLA Linda Reid on behalf on Minister of Transportation Blair Lekstrom as well as representatives from Port Metro Vancouver and Boundary Bay Airport.

The 80th Street overpass is one of nine projects in the $307-million Roberts Bank Rail Corridor program. The $20-million project is funded by the federal government ($7.2 million), provincial government ($2 million), Port Metro Vancouver ($4.8 million) and Delta $1.48 (million). Delta also contributed the land needed for the project, which is valued at $4.5 million.

"This is an excellent example of how partnership and cooperation between all levels of government and the private sector can achieve an outcome that will benefit not only our community but the Lower Mainland's transportation infrastructure," Jackson said.

In addition to the new overpass, which will funnel cars over the railroad crossing, eliminating traffic delays due to passing trains, the project includes the repaving of 72nd Street, traffic lights at 72nd Street and Ladner Trunk Road, and an advanced warning system on Trunk Road to divert drivers to 80th Street when a train is crossing 72nd Street.

Delta is overseeing the project, which is expected to be completed on time and on budget, Jackson said.

It will allow easier access to industrial land adjacent to the airport, making the site more attractive to potential tenants.

The overpass is scheduled for completion by June 2012.
