You won’t see any familiar buildings or homes when season two of Big Sky airs this fall.

The ABC hit crime series has relocated production from Metro Vancouver to Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Shooting was scheduled to start this month and run until April 2022.

The decision isn’t surprising given season one was initially scheduled for Albuquerque and Las Vegas before being scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in those cities. Instead 20th Television brought the production to B.C. and Ladner was certainly a favourite location for several episodes.

The Sundance Motel and Pub, Ladner Village and a heritage home on Arthur Drive were featured throughout the season, along with the Beach Grove Motel in Tsawwassen.

Big Sky stars Katheryn Winnick, Kylie Bunbury, Brian Geraghty, Jesse Keitel, Dedee Pfeiffer, Omar Metally and Anja Savcic. Set in Montana, Jenny Hoyt (Winnick) and Cassie Dewell (Bunbury) are private detectives on the hunt for serial killer Ronald Pergman (Geraghty).

Season two will also shift to a different storyline as Hoyt and Dewell investigate a car wreck outside of Helena and they soon discover that the case may not be as straightforward as it seems. As they unravel the mystery of the accident, their worlds will collide with a band of unsuspecting teens. The show is based on the series of books by C.J. Box.

The production will employ over 500 New Mexico crew members.
