Closures, some lengthy, coming for Delta's Westham Island Bridge

As one of its oldest assets, the 325-metre-long bridge requires regular repairs and maintenance to ensure it remains operational and safe, according to TransLink

The wood-deck truss of the Westham Island Bridge officially opened on March 29, 1910. It is the oldest of the five bridges TransLink owns and operates. It’s also the narrowest TransLink bridge and one of few remaining bridges containing wood components in Metro Vancouver.

TransLink is advising commuters that the Westham Island Bridge in Delta will be undergoing upgrade work starting Monday, Jan. 16, resulting in closures.

Requiring intermittent bridge closures until Jan. 31, the current work will result in regular daily closures will that last for one hour at a time.

TransLink notes there will be 20-minute openings to allow traffic through, but some longer closures will also be required at times.

TransLink will be replacing deteriorated structural and mechanical components of the old bridge’s swing span this year.

More information about the project can be found at https://www.translink.ca/plans-and-projects/projects/maintenance-and-upgrade-program/bridge-projects.

An up-to-date closure schedule can also be requested by emailing Westham.Island.Bridge@translink.ca. Digital signs are also near the bridge which are displaying information about the closures.
