Delta’s COVID-19 numbers have dropped sharply, something reflected in the number of school exposures. Just a couple of weeks ago, school exposures in Delta reached an all-time high with 17 schools having notifications issued.

The number of Delta schools that have had recent COVID-19 exposure events has dropped drastically over the last couple of weeks, reflecting the increasing number of people in the community being vaccinated.

According to Fraser Health’s latest list of school exposures, published on the health region’s website Friday, just three schools had recent COVID-19 notifications.

Those schools are Seaquam Secondary (May 28, 31 and June 1), Pinewood Elementary (May 28, 31 and June 1, 2) and Heath Elementary (May 28).

According to the BC Centre for Disease Control’s latest numbers for the City of Delta, between June 1 and 7, North Delta had 43 new COVID-19 cases, while both Ladner and Tsawwassen each had two new cases.

Delta’s vaccination rate was at 81 per cent for residents 18 and older as of June 7, one of the highest rates in B.C.

The first dose vaccination rate for adults 18 and older for all of B.C is at 74.5 per cent.

Breaking the numbers down to Delta’s individual communities, 79 per cent of North Delta residents 18 and older have had a first dose of vaccine, while it was 83 per cent for both Ladner and Tsawwassen.

Delta’s vaccination rate for those 12 and older is at 79 per cent.

B.C. Medical Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry this week said invitations to book a second dose will only be sent after eight weeks.

She said that, at this point, given the strong demand, appointments are being booked in most locations for two-to-three weeks later.

The interval is well within the safe range for everyone and data shows it may lead to a stronger and longer-lasting immune response, she said.
