The existing George Massey Tunnel is to be decommissioned once the new eight-lane tunnel is open to traffic.

Mayor George Harvie will be chair of the regional district’s George Massey Crossing Task Force.

Metro Vancouver board chair Sav Dhaliwal last week made the announcement as part of Metro’s standing committee structure and appointments for 2022.

Harvie had been the vice-chair.

Dhaliwal, who was chair of the group this year, will co-chair the task force for 2022.

Harvie had gotten other mayors together to form a working group on solutions to a tunnel replacement following the NDP government's decision to scrap the previous Liberal government’s 10-lane bridge plan.

Concerned about the timeline getting another crossing built, the group formed a consensus and put it forward to the region.

Harvie subsequently became part of Metro’s new task force.

After looking at several options, the region’s mayors eventually agreed to put forward a recommendation to government to have a new eight-lane immersed tunnel built.

The province this year announced plans to build the eight-lane tunnel which is expected to be completed in 2030.

The province this year also announced highway corridor upgrades on both sides of the Fraser River in advance of the tunnel replacement.
