On March 2, Surrey RCMP started a missing person investigation centered on locating 14-year-old Joseph Chen who was reported missing after leaving Holy Cross School in the area of 162nd St and 88th Ave.

Delta Police continue to investigate Joseph Chen as a missing person.

Police provided an update on the investigation on March 23.

According to police, on March 2, Chen was reported missing after failing to return home from school. The investigation determined that he had taken public transit to Annacis Island and then was last seen walking on the east sidewalk of Alex Fraser Bridge.

On March 9, investigators requested public assistance, specifically asking anyone who had possibly seen Chen on Alex Fraser Bridge or had dash camera video from the bridge between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. to contact the DPD. As a result, investigators received information confirming Joseph’s presence on the bridge or in the area.

“Traditional missing persons’ investigative steps have continued as well,” said police in a news release. “Further, police received the assistance of search and rescue to comb the area of the Alex Fraser Bridge; however, Joseph was not located.

“Unfortunately, investigators have a probable belief, based on the available video evidence that Joseph jumped from the Alex Fraser Bridge into the Fraser River on March 2.

“While our investigators remain open to all avenues of potential information from the public on Joseph’s location, the police focus is now one of recovery.

The DPD would like to thank everyone for their assistance to date in trying to locate Joseph.”
