Delta residents advised to avoid driving if they can

Here's your forecast for the next few days and, yes, snow is in the picture

It's a good idea to avoid driving today within the City of Delta and the Metro Vancouver region, if you can avoid it.

Delta residents awoke to more snow than expected Tuesday as a heavy dump blanketed the region, certainly giving many drivers white knuckles this morning.

The City of Delta on social media this morning noted crews have been working through the night to clear and salt priority roads.

"This work is ongoing as higher than expected snowfall occurred overnight. Please stay home if you are able or give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination," the city advised on Twitter.

There are also several city facility closures and program cancellations due to the snow, while the Fraser Valley Regional Library says all branches are closed Tuesday due to the poor conditions Garbage and recycling collection in Ladner was also cancelled today.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure Tuesday morning urged people to avoid non-essential travel due to heavy snow.

The ministry says maintenance contractors are out in full force to clear snow and apply sand. It is important for drivers to keep their distance as sand is applied and to not pass winter-maintenance equipment.

The latest forecast shows the region in a clearing pattern with sunny periods Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday with freezing temperatures at night.

The next snow event is slated to come into the region just in time for the Thursday night commute with periods of snow continuing overnight Thursday and into Friday when temperatures are expected to rise and we will see a transition over to rain for the rest of Friday and throughout the Christmas weekend.

Rain is in the forecast for next week and straight through the New Year's Eve weekend.
