The Delta Teachers’ Association says students and teachers at public secondary schools will soon be switching cohorts, which means there are additional risks of transmission with new learning groups.

A dozen Delta schools are now on Fraser Health’s list of schools in the region that have had recent COVID-19 exposures.

According to the latest list published online Monday, Delview Secondary had an exposure event March 31 as well as April 1 and 6. The health authority won’t say whether that case, or cases, involved a student or staff member.

The other schools on the list include English Bluff Elementary (March 30, 31 and April 1), Gibson Elementary (April 6, 7), Immaculate Conception (April 1), Jarvis Traditional Elementary (March 29), McCloskey Elementary (March 29), North Delta Secondary (March 29, April 1), Seaquam Secondary (April 6), South Delta Secondary (March 31 and April 1, 5, 6 and 7), Sunshine Hills Elementary (March 29),  Southpointe Academy (March 29, 30, 31) and Sacred Heart Elementary (March 29, 30, 31 and April 1, 6).

The South Delta Secondary case last week was confirmed by the FHA to be one involving a COVID-19 variant.

In a joint statement with other B.C. Teachers’ Federation locals in Fraser Health last week, the Delta Teachers’ Association conveyed concern about increasing COVID-19 numbers and, in particular, the rising variant numbers.

The DTA wants “more aggressive measures” to combat the spread of COVID-19 as well as a regional response that could include a blended model of in-class and online learning.

The province will reveal the latest COVID-19 numbers for B.C. at a 3 p.m. press conference today (Monday).
