The City of Delta has entered into a new one-year service agreement with the KinVillage Association.

The agreement, in the amount of $166,540, was made public at the Aug. 10 council meeting.

The service agreement between Delta and KinVillage will support the provision of services to residents at the KinVillage Community Centre. The Centre offers a wide range of leisure, recreational, social and learning programs.

According to a Delta staff report, seniors’ recreation services are not a core function of the campus of care and there is no provincial funding to support the Centre. Delta does not operate a seniors’ recreation centre in Tsawwassen and as such, had entered into service agreements with KinVillage to provide these services.

Like Delta’s two seniors’ centres, COVID-19 has caused a temporary closure of the Centre since mid-March. While the Centre is currently not in use to deliver programs, KinVillage is incurring costs to maintain and retain its one program staff.

“During COVID-19, the Centre has been used to accommodate requisite physical distancing for the 100 care home residents during meal service and on occasion used by staff. Going forward, when the older adult day programs resume, the Centre will be used to assist vulnerable seniors and their caregivers.”

In addition to providing programs and services to seniors, the service agreement with Delta also identifies KinVillage as a reception centre in times of emergencies and provides for the use of 20 designated parking spaces for users of Winskill Park sports fields during evening and weekend hours.
