Delta throwback: A Greek fishing community

At one time the Fraser River had active fishing communities including Japanese, Norwegian, Austrian, Greek and other nationalities
Delta's Greek fishing community 1950s
A large Greek fishing community was well established in Delta by early last century.

Here’s a throwback photo from the early 1950s showing some members of Delta's Greek fishing families.

For decades they moored their boats next to their houses on Deas Island in Ladner.

This photo shows members of the following families: Capadouca, Demosten, Moustakas (Martin), Eliades, Englizo, Zacharias, Cocorinas, Mattis, Almas and Deplaris.

Fishing in the Fraser River Estuary played an important part in the settlement and development of Delta, attracting many newcomers from First Nations to numerous European immigrants, such as the large Greek community.

The fishery at one time supported 14 canneries in Delta alone.
