Delta to address dog park safety concerns

The city adding more signage this year

The petition warned that dogs can run into the busy North Delta Recreation Centre parking lot.

The city will review safety concerns about the off-leash dog park adjacent to the North Delta Recreation Centre.

Council recently received a petition with a couple dozen signatures from residents conveying various issues including the lack of a barrier separating the safe off-leash play area from vehicular traffic, insufficient number of trees and not enough conspicuous signage indicating to park users that the area is being used for off-leash dogs.

The petition asks for a temporary fence between the off-leash area and community centre’s parking lot, more trees for the western portion of the park and better signage.

A staff response notes additional signage will be added this year.

Staff will also review fencing as part of an assessment of the site, while additional tree planting will be reviewed in conjunction with the FortisBC right-of-way, which encompasses the existing area.

Delta currently has a dozen off-leash dog areas.

Council this summer approved a staff recommendation to construct another new off-leash compound at Mackie Park in North Delta.

The $300,000 project will be constructed just north of the parking lot at Gray Elementary and east of the gravel playing field.

The city is also planning to add an off-leash enclosure at Pebble Hill Park in Tsawwassen.

That proposal still has to go through another round of public consultation before going to council for approval.
