ElderCollege wants all to know about offerings

Courses, presentations and field trips on fall calendar

Getting their name out to the public is still one of ElderCollege Delta's focuses, says chairperson Sally Norcott.

"We are getting out to the community more and more, but we're still working on it," said Norcott, who is into her second year as chair but has been involved with the local ElderCollege for eight years.

The group offers courses, at various locations around South Delta, for those 50 and over in a in a relaxed, risk-free and social environment. A public registration for the fall program is set for Saturday.

Norcott highlights computer, music and literature courses as ones that are usually popular.

There are also two special community presentations scheduled. Tsawwassen First Nation lands and natural resource manager Andrew Bak will talk about the TFN (Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Ladner Pioneer Library) and Rev. Jim Short of Ladner United Church will talk about his experience in Afghanistan (Saturday, Oct. 1 at 10: 30 a.m. at Cedar Park Church).

The presentations are free and open to the public but ElderCollege requests people call and register if they want to attend.

One recent change for ElderCollege is the addition of a paid, part time office administrative assistant, said Norcott, adding the move is going to be very helpful for the group.

She also noted representatives from ElderCollege Delta attended a third age learning conference in the spring that was hosted by Capilano College's ElderCollege group.

"It was fabulous, there were up to 20 ElderColleges attending from around the province.

It made us feel good because most of them are connected to a college and we're not. That has been our challenge. It made us feel good we've gone as far as we have," Norcott said.

Public registration takes place at the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 10 to 11: 30 a.m. For more information or to register after Sept. 17, contact 604943-0262 or e-mail eldercollegedelta@kinvillage. org.

The complete fall program is available at www. kinvillage.org. Field trips to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary and the UBC Museum of Anthropology are also planned.
