A familiar face on the local theatre scene is taking to a new stage.

Carroll (Lefebvre) Allan, founder and president of the Sidekick Players Club, announced Wednesday night that is will run for Delta school board in the upcoming municipal election.

"As a grandmother and mother, I care deeply about quality, accessibility and the best public education for all of our children," she said.

Allan's two daughters attended Tsawwassen Junior School as well as South Delta Secondary and a generation later two of her five grandchildren attended South Park Elementary School.

She said she is concerned about the future of Delta schools, especially after the current board closed two local schools two years ago.

"What will happen if more schools are closed or sold?" she said. "Once land is gone, it's gone. Stats Canada is predicting a growth in school enrolments over the next several years," she said. "That will happen here as well. Where will your children have to be bussed if there aren't enough schools in the district?"

She said she is also concerned about the number of programs that have been cut due to budget constraints.

"Cutting the arts and physical education is wrong."

A long-time Delta resident, Allan said she wants to ensure the children of Delta receive the best education in the best schools in the province.

"I want them to have the chance to be the best they can be," she said. "But they and the teachers need all the right tools and information and education to make that happen."

Allan said the provincial government must understand that education cannot take a backseat to other projects.

"Education should be the number one priority in everyone's budget with absolutely zero cuts."
