Free bells for Delta cyclists

Volunteers last week gave away almost 100 bicycle bells for cyclists and will be handing out a few more this Saturday

Members of the B.C. Green Party’s Delta South constituency will be handing out free bells to cyclists at the entrance of a local trail this Saturday (June 5).

The free bell campaign is aimed at helping reduce reported conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians.

Pedestrians have a right to feel safe and relax to appreciate nature, rather than constantly watch out for bike traffic, according to the Greens.

Volunteers will be handing out 40 bicycle bells at the Ferry Road entrance to the Millennium Trail in Ladner, starting at around 10 a.m.

They also handed out bells last weekend, which was well-received according to Delta South Green Party Riding Association chair Larry Colero.

“We still have 40 bells to give away and lots of cycling maps as well, which have been popular,” Colero said. “Whatever a cyclist shouts or however they ring their bell, the most important thing is slowing down as they approach walkers. So many just whiz past. It's an accident or three waiting to happen.”
