Climate Convergence will be holding an "intersection action" event in Burnaby.

A group opposing the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project will be holding what they call an "intersection action" this afternoon (May 18) in Burnaby.

Climate Convergence says it'll will be stationed at Lougheed Highway and Gaglardi Way starting at 4 p.m.

While it has no plans to block the intersection, the group explains it'll march with banners in sync with pedestrian crossing lights.

“Between 2018 and 2020, Canada provided more public financing to oil and gas companies than any other G20 country," central organizer Alison Bodine said in a news release.

"A $10 billion loan guarantee for the climate-destroying TMX pipeline is yet another tax-payer subsidy to fossil fuel companies and bankers that reported record-breaking profits in 2021. People in Canada need money for healthcare, education, housing, and social justice, not pipelines that destroy the planet and trample on Indigenous rights."

Last Wednesday (May 11), police were called to a TMX worksite in Burnaby for reports of two protesters in inflatable dinosaur costumes playing badmintion inside the construction fence.

Two women scaled a fence at a worksite near an industrial complex in 8600-block Commerce Court, according to the group, which opposes the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.

Videos posted by the protesters show the pair were inside the fence hitting a birdie back and forth with badminton racquets before climbing back out of the worksite.

Mounties were waiting on the other side of the fence, and the video shows the women being taken into custody.

Burnaby RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Mike Kalanj confirmed officers had responded to a report of approximately six demonstrators in the area shortly after 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

He said two women were arrested and released on paperwork to attend court at a later date.

“At this time, the two individuals are not facing criminal contempt charges,” he added. “However, mischief charges will be forwarded for both.”

Burnaby RCMP confirmed the individuals involved had been wearing dinosaur outfits.
