An unknown woman is being credited for helping to save a person in a dire situation in the waters of Boundary Bay Monday night.

According to a spokesperson from the Canadian Coast Guard, on Monday night around 6:30 p.m., the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Victoria received a call via 9-1-1 about a person in the water calling for help in the Boundary Bay area.

The Canadian Coast Guard hovercraft Moytel, RCMSAR #5, Delta Police, Delta Fire and BC Emergency Health Services responded. The U.S. Coast Guard was also involved in trying to locate the person, tasking a helicopter from Port Angeles and a fast response craft from Bellingham. Several vessels of opportunity in the area also responded.

“Fortunately a woman on shore was able to locate the person clinging to a mile marker buoy, about 500m offshore, after their inflatable had punctured,” said the Coast Guard in an email response to the Optimist. “The woman was able to paddle out to the person and provide assistance until the CCGS Moytel arrived on scene and transferred the person to BC Emergency Health Services on land.”

The Coast Guard could not provide any details on the status of the person pulled from the water.
