The province’s civilian watchdog has asserted jurisdiction after two men were injured in Langley Wednesday night following an attempted arrest involving Delta police and RCMP.

According to a news release from DPD, officers were in Langley on a matter related to a serious investigation from the previous week, when officers attempted to arrest two men.

“During the attempted arrest the two men received non-life threatening injuries. They were eventually arrested. The incident occurred in the 2400 block of 200 St. in Langley,” said DPD spokesperson Cris Leykauf. “The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has asserted jurisdiction regarding the circumstances of how the two men were injured. No civilians were injured during the incident and neither were any police officers injured.”

Leykauf said the RCMP has now taken conduct of the DPD investigation regarding the two men and this investigation will run concurrent to the IIO investigation.

“As the IIO and RCMP are now the lead agencies in these investigations, the Delta Police will not be commenting any further on this matter,” added Leykauf.

According to Curtis Kreklau from South Fraser News Services, Langley RCMP has closed 200th St in both directions until further notice and is interviewing multiple witnesses at the scene.
